Champions League Quarter Finals

Bayern Munich v Manchester United

The two teams have a history in the UEFA Champions League, most noticeably the 1999 final. In that match, Bayern Munich led 1-0 late in the match before Manchester United scored two late goals and won the trophy. Bayern would win the title in 2001 while Manchester United won the trophy in 2008.

There are injury concerns for both sides which will have a major impact on the match. Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, who didn’t play in Saturday’s EPL win against Bolton, will both be fit to start for Tuesday’s match. Bayern are less confident that Arjen Robben will be available because of a calf injury. If he’s not in the squad on Tuesday, it will be a significant loss at Robben has been a key player in the midfielder.

Bayern Munich advance to the quarterfinals on away goals over Fiorentina while Manchester United dominated AC Milan with a 7-2 aggregate win. The Red Devils will be satisfied with a draw and any away goals with the second leg at Old Trafford. While Bayern have gotten good results on the road, they know they can’t head to England needing a win or to score several away goals.

It should be a very competitive match with at least 2-3 goals if not many more. If Robben is able to play, Bayern could get a win but a draw is most likely. Rooney scored four goals in the matches against AC Milan and should score on Tuesday. His form has been incredible and only matches in recent weeks by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

Bayern have to get a lead to have a chance to reach the semifinals but Manchester United have shown they are able to get results in any away match.

My Prediction : Bayern Munich 2-2 Manchester United

Lyon v Bordeaux Preview
Both teams have had very successful runs in the Champions League and at least one Ligue 1 side will make the semifinals. Lyon advanced from the round of 16 with a surprise 2-1 aggregate win over favorites Real Madrid. Bordeaux advances to this round with a comfortable 3-1 aggregate win over Greek side Olympiacos. While not as impressive as Lyon’s win, Bordeaux have not lost in the Champions League this season and have five clean sheets in eight matches.

It should be a defensive battle with two teams that have shown the ability to play disciplined football. Bordeaux leads Ligue 1 with only 23 goals conceded in 28 matches and is at the top of the table. Lyon is two points back in 5th place as Ligue 1 remains extremely crowded at the top. The two teams played in December with Bordeaux winning 1-0 at the Stade de Gerland.

Injuries for Lyon include Francois Clerc, Jean-Alain Boumsong, and Johan Hartock for Lyon while Bordeaux has Marc Planus, Abdoulaye Traore, and Gregory Sertic out with injuries.

It’s a very tough match to predict as Bordeaux has been impressive in all competitions this season but Lyon did beat Real Madrid 1-0 at home. It should be a low scoring match and anything above two goals would be surprising. The leading goalscorer for Lyon in the Champions League is Miralem Pjanic with four goals. Bordeaux’s top scorers are Michael Ciani and Marouane Chamakh who have three goals each.

My Prediction : Lyon 1-0 Bordeaux
